He was an only child born to Calvin H. Baird Sr. (formerly Douglas County Sheriff) and Marian (Hanlin) Baird. He attended Jr. and Sr. high in Roseburg and was active in the National Guard. When the Korean conflict broke out, he was too young to be in the military, consequently, he had to resign from the Guard. Four months later he completed his schooling and joined the Army Air Corp in January 1950. He served 4 years active duty- mostly in Korea with the K-9 corp. He then volunteered for two more years in the reserves.After being discharged from the service, he attended Boise Jr. College and misc. industrial courses while employed by
