WILLIAM KRUEGEL

PVT

Army

HOME : GLENDALE, CA

Plaque : Wall 2, Row B, Col 7

3rd Texas Infantry William Kruegel Author of “Call to Arms” The following is the first page of his book......Chapter 1 The Bugle Call Sherman said “War is Hell” and he was right. He would of been right had he soldiered under Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, General Miles, or General Pershing. I soldiered in three wars and I know. As I sit here and stare at what is left of my right hand---stare with the one eye left me and that seventy-five per cent blind from glaucoma---as I shiver a bit from the virus of malaria and other tropical fevers that course through my hardened veins, I feel that I am justified in agreeing with Sherman. Sometimes I wonder where those missing members of my anatomy are; to what jungle soil have they returned; with whose flesh and blood they intermingled since they became ash and dust. When on the judgement day the last long bugle call resounds from the Heavens will they return to the same throbbing life into which they were born? But enough of that. I might say here, though, that the army - any army - either makes or breaks a man. This was true in the days of the Pharaohs, or of Ghengis Khan, as it is today.
